Geocaching Is the Greatest Game Ever Created

A few months ago, one of my friends asked me out of the blue whether I wanted to go geocaching. The second I heard this it was an instant yes, as while I’ve had an account since 2017, I haven’t played in years.

For those that don’t know, Geocaching is a game where you get given the general location of a hidden ‘cache’ and you have to venture off and search that area to find it and write your name in the logbook. While there is a lot more to it than that I’ll just leave it here for simplicity’s sake.

Since picking it back up my friends and I have been going on a caching spree, doing over 100 since we started attempting them. It’s become a sort of a habit in a way. Every few weeks on an occasional weekend or a few times throughout the school holidays we get together to plan out a route and go caching for the day. Where we live there are hundreds of caches within a 45 min drive and they tend to be placed in groups. This makes it perfect for getting multiple of them in a single trip.

While finding the caches is fun in and of itself, one of the more unexpected niceties that I have come across is the fact that it will let you explore random nooks and crannies of the city that you normally never would. When walking between caches we’ve found lovely parks, nice running tracks, and overall have found nice places that only people hyper local to that area probably know exists.

I think one of the main reasons I love Geocaching so much is because some of them feel like you are going on an actual adventure. One of the most memorable ones we did made us drive to the middle of nowhere and climb on top of a massive pipeline running above a river.

Once across we had to hike our way up this hill and search the area surrounding for the cache. After about half an hour of searching we were eventually able to find it hidden deep within some bushes. I think this cache in particular shows just how disguised these caches can be.

Overall, if you’re reading this and haven’t tried Geocaching I would highly recommend it. If you live in a decently populated area there are probably dozens of them to choose from. While to access some of the more difficult ones you need to pay for a premium subscription, (which we did), there are still so many free caches out there that you can try.
